Ok, the only reason I have watched this movie and own this movie is because Sarah Michelle Geller is in it. All of the other stuff is usually fast forwarded thru until I get to scenes that have her in it, and towards the end of the movie I just jump to the end because I love the song at the end with the final scene which is actually fairly well done. People seem to love this movie, especially kids who were teenagers in the mid to late 1990's, this movie is incredibly forgettable without SMG.

So Kathryn, played by Sarah Michelle Geller (The Grudge) and Sebastian, played by Ryan Phillipe (Crash,) are step-brother and sister who attend a high-class private New York school, whose parents are never around, so they create all sorts of hell. Being teenagers they use that most wonderful of tools, sex. Sebastian and Kathryn make a bet that Sebastian can have sex with the new headmaster's daughter Annette, played by Reese Witherspoon (Vanity Fair,) who has a national article about how she is waiting for marriage before she has sex. If Kathryn wins, she gets his car, if Sebastian wins he gets Kathryn, and he gets to stick it anywhere.

If you have seen Dangerous Liaisons then this is the 'modern' take. I have not. Nor do I want to. I did not care for the story. The story about rich kids manipulating other people just to get laid or to control people does not thrill me. The only thing that I like about the story is the scene where Kathryn objects to the fact that it appears to be socially acceptable for guys to f*ck anything that moves but if a woman does it she's considered a whore. Nice point, just a long way to get there. Nothing else can be deemed of quality from the script.

I thought the acting was incredible average, save for one person. Phillipe and Witherspoon are uninspiring in their roles and Selma Blair (The Sweetest Thing), who plays Cecile, does a wonderful job of being annoying in every scene. If she meant to then it is an award winning performance, if she didn't then she has acting issues.

Geller was by far the best performer in the movie. She had to play the doppelganger of Kathryn who has to be a good girl around everyone else but could be herself around Sebastian. I thought she pulled it off great. But then again, her constant talk about sex was distracting me in almost every scene so she could have been horrible and I wouldn't know. But I will error on the side of her and say she did a good job.

I wanted to see SMG in this movie before I heard about the kiss scene between her and Blair. After watching it, it wasn't half the turn on as her talk in the fist scene. Because of that, and SMG in general, I own this movie, so I won't give it the rating it deserves, but its Sarah Michelle Geller, I never think straight when it involves her.
